WELCOME TO KINGSTON GENERAL HOSPITAL ARCHIVE

Image promoting National Hospital Day, 1972.
The Kingston General Hospital Archive documents the long and rich history of the Hospital beginning in 1832 and contains about 200 metres of textual material, photographs, architectural plans and drawings, sound recordings and printed materials. This rich and varied resource is sustained by the hospital’s Administrative Records Management and Archive Program (ARMAP).
In 1996, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada designated Kingston General Hospital to be of national historic and architectural significance as one of the longest continuously operating general hospitals in Canada. The records of the 19th century reflect the transition from a charitable institution to an active treatment hospital while the records of the 20th century outline the development of the principle tertiary care hospital in the South-eastern Ontario Integrated Health Sciences Centre.

HISTORY:

Postcard of Kingston General Hospital, 1903.
The initial records relating to the evolution of the hospital were identified, acquired and preserved by Dr. Margaret Angus and others during the preparation of her historical account: Kingston General Hospital: A Social and Institutional History, published in 1973. In 1981, a formal agreement between the Kingston General Hospital and Queen’s University established that the KGH Archive would be housed by Queen’s University Archives, while remaining the property of the hospital.
The Administrative Records Management and Archive Program (ARMAP) began at KGH with a pilot project in 1991. This program has systematically conducted inventories and created records schedules of each administrative unit in the hospital. These record retention schedules have been implemented and the records of archival value from each administrative unit are transferred to the Kingston General Hospital Archive. A finding aid for each administrative unit is prepared according to the Rules of Archival Description (RAD)
