As of May 1, 2009, Kingston is a designated area under the provincial French Language
Services Act, joining 24 other designated communities across Ontario. The City of
Kingston is the first area to be designated within the South East Local Health Integrated
Network (LHIN) geographical area.
The designation means all provincial ministry offices (drivers registration and licences,
OHIP, etc.) must be able to provide their services in French.
The designation also impacts Kingston health services providers. Kingston General
Hospital, Hotel Dieu Hospital and Providence Care have each been identified by the
South East LHIN to develop a plan to be able to offer our services in French, and report
on our progress through our accountability agreements. Twelve other community health
services have also been identified.
At KGH, a French Language Services (FLS) plan has been developed and submitted to
the SE LHIN. This plan is a starting point from which a French Language Services
committee will be created and look to the future to improve FLS offered over time.
Patients should know that while we begin to implement our plan, KGH already has
access to language/cultural interpretation services for patients who do not understand
English. Should you require interpretive services, please tell your health-care provider or
whomever you are dealing with at the time of registration and appointment bookings.
For more information about French language services, please see the attached Q&As or
contact KGH Patient Relations at 613-549-6666 ext. 4158.
