Functions

The principal functions of Pharmacy Services are to:

• procure, store, and distribute hospital, clinic, and outpatient drug supplies in a safe, efficient, and effective manner
• provide patient care as members of the team to patients and families in a variety of locations and situations
• allocate, utilize, and evaluate available resources to meet the standards of pharmacy practice
• plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the quality of professional and technical services
• provide leadership for pharmacy practice and safe medication use that is visible and proactive
• recruit and retain personnel with a high level of pharmacy practice knowledge and skills
• participate in inter-professional research and education
• provide information on drugs and therapeutics that is current and unbiased to hospital staff, students, and patients and their families
• advance the practice of pharmacy through research activities and ongoing staff, pharmacy resident, and student education and development activities
• maintain an effective drug formulary system using an evidence-based, collaborative approach
• maintain an effective drug-use management program designed to monitor, evaluate, and improve drug therapy
• promote the safe use of drugs through monitoring, reporting, analysis and prevention of medication incidents and adverse drug reactions
