Clinical
The core clinical role of the Department of Anesthesiology is to provide 24 hour seven day a week anesthetic and analgesic care for the inpatients of the Southeastern Ontario Health Sciences Centre, including consultative support for other (sub)specialties. The Department provides specialty chronic pain care to patients on an ambulatory basis and delivers secondary to tertiary care through a variety of services including peri-operative, post-operative, and parturient. Services are delivered in outpatient clinics, operating rooms, and case rooms, as well as in remote locations of the hospitals including radiology, electrophysiology, electroconvulsive, and intensive care units. In-house staff is on call around the clock at Kingston General Hospital (KGH), and on a more limited basis at Hotel Dieu Hospital (HDH).

Along with providing all epidural analgesia and anesthetic services for uncomplicated vaginal or operative delivery, the Department collaborates with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in providing specialized outpatient consultation services for women with complicated medical and/or obstetrical histories. The Department also fulfils other collaborative clinical roles such as providing electroconvulsive treatment and pediatric dental anesthesia

Research
Research, in the Department, is conducted in acute and chronic pain, medical informatics, operating room planning and scheduling, cerebral trauma, outcomes research, high frequency ECG, clinical trials, and education.
