Clinical
The Division of Endocrinology and
Metabolism offers a full range of consultative
specialty endocrine care for the population
of Southeastern Ontario. The Division also
provides services for patients referred
from Moose Factory and its surrounding region.
Consultative services in the investigation
and management of patients with a variety
of endocrinology and metabolism diseases
include: diabetes mellitus (types 1, 2 and
gestational), hypoglycaemia, lipid and calcium
disorders, hypertension, obesity, and pituitary,
thyroid (including thyroid cancer), adrenal
diseases and gonadal diseases (including
male reproductive disorders and the andropause).
The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism
also performs and interprets subspecialty
tests, while management of disorders includes
the supervision of diabetes foot care clinics
and the Diabetes Education Centre.
Inpatient care is provided in the Kingston
General Hospital (KGH) and inpatient consultation
service in the Providence
Continuing Care Centre - St. Mary's
of the Lake site, while outpatient care
is centred in a variety of multidisciplinary
clinics held in the KGH. Along with this
care, members in the Division conduct mini
consultations with community physicians
and specialists via telephone or fax machine.
Research
Current research foci for the Division
of Endocrinology and Metabolism are the
areas of obesity, cardiovascular disease
risk factors, diabetes mellitus and the
elderly. The Division has developed collaborative
connections for research with the Department
of Medicine Division of Geriatrics, and
the Division of Rheumatology. The Departments
of Diagnostic Radiology and Pathology, the
Department of Anesthesiology, and the School
of Physical and Health Education.
In addition, the Division has collaborative
research relationships with virtually every
medical school in Canada and several American
medical schools through involvement in multicentre
clinical trials. Inter-university collaborations
take place with the University
of Guelph, the University
of Waterloo, McMaster
University, the University
of Pittsburgh, and the University
of Bern.
