Gastroenterology

Clinical
The role of the Division of Gastroenterology (GI) is to provide a full range of tertiary level care in luminal gastroenterology, hepatology, and pancreatology for the population of Southeastern Ontario, along with secondary level care for the greater Kingston area. This includes emergency, inpatient and ambulatory consultation, assessment, treatment, and follow-up services. Inpatient and consultation services are provided at Kingston General Hospital while ambulatory service is covered at Hotel Dieu Hospital. The Division also occasionally provides quaternary-level consults on patients from across Canada with GI motility disorders.

The Division runs urgent and general ambulatory GI clinics for patients with unspecified GI disorders, as well as special clinics for those with specified GI disorders including motility disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, general liver disease, hepatitis, and colorectal cancer screening. The Division provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures and performs a variety of gastrointestinal motility studies, along with endoscopic ultrasound, pH-metry and GI function studies. The Division interacts with the Division of General Surgery and the Department of Diagnostic Radiology for the provision of some services (i.e., endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography).

Research
The Division has one of the largest research profiles in the medical school. Its Gastrointestinal Diseases Research Unit (GIDRU) has an international reputation and has received a major grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for infrastructure support. The Divisions research profile has both a bioscience and a clinical focus on disease conditions, for example dyspepsia and H. pylori, functional GI disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. The Division also participates in clinical trials and conducts collaborative research. The multidisciplinary collaborations involve working with the Departments of Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Medicine, Physiology, Biology, Pathology, Surgery, and Microbiology & Immunology.

GI residents are encouraged to conduct research and disseminate results in peer-reviewed journals and through presentations at national and international meetings.
