General Surgery

Clinical
The Division of General Surgery provides adult and paediatric tertiary level surgical care for the Southeastern Ontario region and Moose Factory. More routine secondary level surgical care is provided for the adults and children in the greater Kingston and Moose Factory areas. Along with providing coverage for the Critical Care and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Cares Trauma Priority Program, the Division offers minimally invasive surgery, head and neck surgery, and surgical treatment for various diseases including, but not limited to, oesophageal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic, and colorectal and other gastrointestinal, breast, venous, and oncologic disease. Inpatient care is provided at KGH and Weeneebako General Hospital (WGH). Outpatient services are offered at Hotel Dieu Hospital, KGH and WGH. The Division of General Surgery does not offer solid organ transplantation.

As well as providing traditional surgical services, the Division performs endoscopic procedures for both secondary and tertiary care gastrointestinal diseases.

The Division of General Surgery interacts with other services in providing consultative and concurrent care. These services include the Division of Gastroenterology, the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital, Breast Assessment Centre, and the Critical Care Program.

Research
The Division's research foci include gastrointestinal disease, along with education, clinical outcomes, and health policy research. Clinical research is often carried out in collaboration with the basic science departments, other services such as Infectious Disease, Oncology, and the Gastrointestinal Disease Research Unit (GIDRU). Along with this direct role in research the Division assumes a supportive role in encouraging and supervising surgical residents research activity.
