Clinical
The Division of Nephrology provides
both attending and consultative support
for patients with actual or predicted kidney
disorders. This includes patients with acute
or chronic abnormal glomerular filtration
rate, proteinuria, hematuria, hypertension,
electrolyte disturbances, anemia, and bone
diseases. The Division participates in the
renal care team that provides direct care
of patients with renal insufficiency who
are likely to require renal replacement
therapy (RRT), and directly supervises the
RRT and related issues.
The Division fulfils its role in the Ministry
of Health and Long-Term Care Priority Program
through numerous programs, through both
local and outreach clinics. These include
the in-hospital nephrology ward, chronic
kidney disease outpatient program, renal
transplant program, peritoneal dialysis
program, and hemodialysis program (in-centre
haemodialysis, home hemodialysis, Belleville
Dialysis Clinic, Burr satellite dialysis
unit, Kingston Penitentiary Dialysis Unit,
Perth/Smiths Falls satellite dialysis unit,
Picton satellite dialysis unit, supervision
of Independent Health Facility patients
in Cornwall, Brockville, and Peterborough,
and planned satellite units in Bancroft
and Moose Factory).
Patients and physicians from Southeastern
Ontario and the Moose Factory area receive
clinical guidance from the Division of Nephrology,
while nephrologists and nephrology trainees
from Ontario receive quaternary support
from the Division.
Ambulatory and inpatient care are provided
at Kingston General Hospital and Weeneebayko
General Hospital. The Division provides
only ambulatory care off-site in Belleville,
Perth/Smiths Falls, the Kingston Penitentiary,
and Hotel Dieu Hospital. At the Providence
Continuing Care Centre - St. Marys of the
Lake, the Division offers inpatient consultation
service only.
In support of the clinical services offered,
the Division provides a comprehensive chronic
kidney disease education program and is
responsible for the education of all renal
patients under its care in order to allow
patients to give true informed consent.
Research Members of the Division initiate and collaborate
in research activities related to education,
clinical pharmacology, and nephrology. The
renal team reports on these activities at
national and international meetings. |
