Clinical
The clinical role of the Division
of Neurology is to provide a comprehensive
spectrum of neurological care to adult patients
from the population of Southeastern Ontario.
This is accomplished primarily through a
consultative role to referring physicians
in the region, and includes giving advice
and direction by phone and mail. The Division
also provides ongoing care to patients with
chronic, progressive, or protracted neurological
disease that require specialized care and
ongoing supervision. The Division plays
a leadership role in the Stroke Strategy
with the hospital being the Regional Stroke
Centre.
The Division provides service
on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Inpatient
care is provided primarily in designated
neurology beds and the Neurosciences Critical
Care Unit (NCCU) located on Kidd 7. The
NCCU is a step-down unit for seriously
ill patients not requiring respiratory support.
Scheduled clinics provide ambulatory care
locally and through outreach clinics in
Smiths Falls, Brockville, and Weeneebayko.
Neurology relies on the services provided
by Neurosurgery as well as various other
services in the hospital such as clinical
lab, diagnostic imaging, radiation oncology,
physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy,
audiology and speech language pathology,
OR and PACU, mental health and addictions,
clinical nutrition, social work, respiratory
therapy and specially trained nursing including
Advanced Practice Nurses, Nurse Practitioners.
There is a bi-directional relationship between
intensive care and surgical and endoscopy
day/night care. Chronic care/complex continuing
care and respite care and emergency services
rely on the services provided by Neurology.
Research The research role of the Division of Neurology
is to participate in clinical trials and
health services research, such as the delivery
of stroke care. |
