Paediatrics

Using a family-centered approach, the pediatric program provides age-appropriate inpatient and ambulatory care to children from birth to age 18. Divided into divisions (neonatology, hematology/oncology, critical care, developmental pediatrics, and general pediatrics), inpatient services are provided in the pediatric unit, pediatric step-down unit, intensive care unit and the neonatal intensive care unit. The majority of ambulatory care is provided through the Children’s Outpatient Centre and the Child Development Centre at Hotel Dieu Hospital while outpatient oncology is provided through the cancer centre at KGH. The program presently supports a number of formal multidisciplinary teams, such as Child Protection, Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis, Asthma, Acquired Brain Injury, Pediatric Oncology and Special Infant Clinic. These teams enhance the quality of care and service provision and support continuity of care following discharge.

Research

Pediatrics’ role in research includes collaborative activity with foci in cancer, neurosciences and epidemiology. The program contributes to clinical trials, including multi-centre trials in neonatology and critical care and trials of new hematology/oncology therapies. In addition, the program takes a role in clinical research designed to advance clinical practices based on outcome and quality improvement initiatives.
