Respirology

Clinical
The Division of Respirology provides 24-hour seven days per week inpatient service as well as inpatient and outpatient consultative services for the diagnosis and management of the broad spectrum of respiratory conditions. While the majority of consultations are from the greater Kingston catchment area, specialty referrals come from Southeastern Ontario and from as far as Ottawa, Peterborough, Moose Factory, Toronto, and occasionally other provinces like New Brunswick.

This role includes the provision of secondary and tertiary level inpatient care. Several members of the Division contribute the equivalent of 1 FTE to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which is described elsewhere. The Division provides ambulatory care through a variety of general, urgent, and specialized clinics and programs including Asthma, COPD, Sleep Disorders, Tuberculosis, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Cystic Fibrosis, and Pulmonary Hypertension clinics. The Lung Cancer Diagnostic clinic is held collaboratively with the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital.

Research
The primary research focus of the Division is clinical research examining the physiology and pathophysiology of various respiratory disorders and diseases such as COPD, asthma, sleep disorders, dyspnea, and weaning from mechanical ventilation. Additional research foci of the Division include epidemiology and clinical trials.

The Division supports the Respiratory Investigation Unit, Asthma Research Unit, Pulmonary Function and Sleep Laboratories that provide the settings for much of the research activity conducted within the Division. The multidisciplinary research of the Division involves participation in networks of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma researchers, collaborations in groups (Circulatory, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Research Group) and with departments such as the Departments of Physiology and Biochemistry, Physical Education, Nursing, and Palliative Care. Furthermore the Division supports Research in Progress seminars to facilitate the dissemination of research results.
