Urology

Clinical
The Department of Urology provides a full range of secondary and tertiary services, excluding extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy or advanced paediatric urological surgical, to the population of the Southeastern Ontario and Moose Factory. Along with providing inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical urology services through Kingston General Hospital and associated clinics, the Department provides outreach clinics to the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital and Prince Edward County Memorial site of the Quinte Health Corporation as well as to Moose Factory.

Specialty services are provided in the areas of urological oncology, nephrolithiasis, and male sexual dysfunction and minimally invasive urologic surgery, for example. The Department supports diagnostic and therapeutic services specific to patients with urological problems, such as urodynamics, phallodynamics, and biofeedback for patients with voiding dysfunction. The Department further supports therapeutic teaching by directing programs for male sexual dysfunction and voiding dysfunction.

The Department of Urology functions as part of many multidisciplinary teams supporting services or programs such as: oncology with Radiation and Medical Oncology, trauma with the Trauma Program, end stage renal disease services with the Division of Nephrology, human sexual dysfunction with Psychotherapy services, complex urinary incontinence with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, rehabilitation medicine with the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Paediatrics. In addition, the Department of Urology supports urology services in the Quinte Health Corporation at the Belleville and Trenton sites, Brockville General Hospital and Perth-Smiths Falls Hospitals through tertiary care emergency referrals.

The Urology service relies on clinical lab, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, OR and PACU, emergency services and CCAC to provide optimal patient care.

Research
It is the research role of the Department to carry out basic science and clinical research with a focus on human sexual function and dysfunction, inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract, and urologic oncology and andrology specifically, the study of the hormonal changes in the aging male.

The Department of Urology supports basic science research laboratories that are devoted primarily to microbiological research and conducts collaborative research with the Departments of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Anatomy and Cell Biology, Oncology. The Department also has an extensive program of clinical research actively engaged in locally developed clinical trials as well as multi-centred pharmaceutical sponsored clinical trial research.
