Research at Kingston General Hospital

As the only tertiary care hospital in Southeastern Ontario, and the principal acute care teaching hospital associated with Queen's University Medical School, KGH has a proud tradition of excellence in healthcare research. Our activities cover the spectrum from investigations in basic science to clinical and health services research.

Our programs in computer-assisted orthopedic surgery, hemophilia, trauma, amyloid and Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction and prostate disorders, and reproductive research, have brought international recognition to the hospital.

In our newly established Clinical Research Centre we have brought together our health services researchers in critical care studies, end of life and quality of life studies, trauma, asthma and neonatology, all of which are nationally and internationally competitively funded. The Centre serves as a resource for data based clinical research throughout the hospital, providing methodological and biostatistical services for researchers. Other funded centres include the CFI-funded Gastrointestinal Diseases Research Unit (GIDRU), the Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC) and the Centre for Applied Urological Research (CAUR).

The KGH research development office has a close relationship with our partners at Queen's University and the Hotel Dieu Hospital and Providence Care, with whom we share common policies and procedures. Almost all of our researchers are faculty members of the university, and the strategic directions of the hospital and the university reflect each other's strengths.

The Vice President of Research Development at KGH is also the Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen's University, and Director of Research at Hotel Dieu Hospital.

The hospital has at present approximately 50,000 sq. feet of research space, including the new Gastro Intestinal Diseases Research Unit (GIDRU) funded by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI).

Researchers at KGH currently receive approximately 18 million dollars in external funding from national and international agencies, as well as through clinical trials.
