Diagnostic Radiology

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology's physicians provide sub-specialty diagnostic imaging consultative service to the physicians of the Clinical Departments and their divisions, and diagnostic interpretations of imaging studies requested by primary care physicians and consultants in the Greater Kingston Area and, for some services, to those in southeastern Ontario in an academic setting. As the only tertiary care centre in the region of southeastern Ontario, there is a large referral base with a population base of about 600,000 encompassing the area between Belleville and Brockville, and Smith Falls to Lake Ontario.

In Undergraduate Medical Education, physicians of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology provide basic and clinical skill lectures, teaching files, and take on mentoring roles, facilitate in Problem Based Learning, and accept elective students. There is also a four-year residency-training program during which the physicians of the Department are involved in extensive one on one education with the residents, in addition to daily scheduled diagnostic group rounds, weekly grand rounds, and monthly lectures to all residents. Elective rotations in Diagnostic Radiology are provided to residents from other departments, such as Emergency, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery, and Neurology. The Department’s physicians also provide lectures to undergraduate students in other schools within the Faculty, such as the physiotherapy program in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy, or as invited lecturers or participants in rounds of other departments or divisions within the school.

The physicians within the Department of Diagnostic Radiology are involved primarily in research through collaborations with physicians from the clinical departments. The collaboration often involves expertise during the planning of the research, supervision of the technological aspects of the research or interpretative services. The various imaging modalities are a sought after resource for clinical investigators. Many of technologists and staff of the Department are involved in the collaborations.
