Family Medicine – The Centre for Studies in Primary Care

The Centre for Studies in Primary Care (CSPC) was created by the Senate of Queen's University in November 2000, and is operated within and as part of the Department of Family Medicine. The CSPC works to increase capacity in primary care research through research training for students, family medicine residents, other primary care trainees, and practicing family physicians. A Fellowship or Masters level program in Primary Care Research is a goal of the CSPC.

The research activities of the CSPC respond to community need and funding opportunities. All research is related to primary health care. Current funded activities are in hypertension, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive lung disease, prevention of falls in the elderly, access to care by disabled people, exercise/obesity/metabolic syndrome, and ambulatory teaching. The CSPC also develops ethical relationships with industry for the development of educational programs, the provision of services related to evidence based medicine and critical appraisal of literature, and the conduct of research. These projects must be related to primary care and do not include marketing or clinical trials of drugs.

To conduct research in the primary care setting a 'laboratory' of practices in the community is needed. The CSPC has established a Network for Studies in Primary Care (NSPC). This consists of a core group of community-based practitioners who are interested in the development of research ideas in primary care, and a larger group of practicing physicians who participate by enrolling patients from their practices into research studies.

Vision: We strive to foster a spirit of inquiry in our faculty, residents and students; to create innovations in our areas of research focus; and to seek to create, evaluate, and disseminate knowledge that leads to the improvement of the practice of primary care and its delivery to Canada's population. Our emphasis on health as well as disease leads to work in disease prevention in all the areas of research focus. And our belief that clinical practice should be, wherever possible, based on evidence, has led to work on the evaluation of the use and effectiveness of evidence-based guidelines in clinical practice.
