Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is a progressive, dynamic, goal-oriented and time-limited process. In rehabilitation, people with disabilities (either congenital or acquired through injury or illness) work to achieve an optimal level of function and independence within their family and community. Rehabilitation addresses all spheres of life including mobility, communication, activities of daily living, vocation, leisure, spiritual and emotional concerns. Physiatrists (medical specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation) provide medical consultation, ongoing assessment and care to rehabilitation patients, and may work in a diverse spectrum of subspecialty areas and environments, including stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, amputation and general musculoskeletal rehabilitation.
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is dedicated to the development of rehabilitation research to meet the growing need in Ontario. Research is being carried out-within the department, in collaboration with other faculties and departments at Queen's University and internationally. Current faculty research projects and interests include a wide variety of topics related to stroke and spinal cord rehabilitation and community based rehabilitation.
