Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery consists of six divisions, including cardiothoracic
surgery, general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery and
vascular surgery. While all divisions are involved in research, two of them,
the Division of General Surgery and the Division of Orthopaedics, have
particularly active research programs. The department also collaborates
activity with the departments of Community Health & Epidomiology and Pathology & Molecular Medicine.
The Division of General Surgery provides adult and paediatric tertiary care for
the Southeastern Ontario region, and Moose Factory. More routine secondary
level care is provided for the adults and children in the greater Kingston and
Moose Factory areas. Along with providing coverage for the Critical Care and
the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's Trauma 'Priority Program', the
division offers minimally invasive surgery, head and neck surgery, and surgical
treatment for various diseases including, but not limited to, oesophageal,
hepatobiliary and pancreatic, colorectal and other gastrointestinal, breast,
venous, and oncologic disease. Research foci of the Division of General Surgery
include gastrointestinal disease, along with education, clinical outcomes, and
health policy research. Clinical research is often carried out in collaboration
with the basic science departments, other services such as Infectious Disease,
Oncology, and the Gastrointestinal Diseases Research Unit (GIDRU).
The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery has a long history of excellence in
orthopaedic clinical care, orthopaedic education and musculoskeletal research.
It covers a broad range of orthopaedic subspecialty disciplines, including
lower extremity and total joint replacement, hand and upper extremity,
microsurgery, pediatric orthopaedics, spine surgery, sports medicine and
arthroscopic reconstruction, foot and ankle surgery, orthopaedic traumatology
and oncology. It is an integral component of the Human Mobility Research Centre
at KGH (http://me.queensu.ca/hmrc/).
