Centre for Applied Urological Research

The creation of a Centre for Applied Urological Research consolidates and coordinates the Departmental research efforts in collaboration with both Queen's and KGH. They share the sense of importance of the development of a Centre for excellence in urological research. The opportunity has been found in an older (in fact, historically significant) building belonging to KGH, which accommodates the needs of the Centre. Four facts augur well for the success of this Centre for advanced research, building on current resources. First, the proportionally large amount of original, widely recognized and highly successful translational urological research generated by the Queen's team (in terms of the frequency of our publications being quoted in the scientific literature, original studies leading to generally accepted improvements in human health, assigned patents, etc.). Second, the little recognized fact that, despite the limited population of Kingston and its surrounding area we have, consistently, matched or over-performed much larger Centres in terms of patient/subject accrual. Third and more important, is the presence of a superb and tightly knitted academic environment functioning within strict adherence to ethical and scientific standards together with an unsurpassed quality and accuracy in the conduction of peer-reviewed agencies and industry supported clinical investigations. Fourthly, the publication record by the group is remarkable: large number of papers of significance (one was chosen by the American Urological Association as one of the most significant published in urology in the last 100 years), with a large quotation ratio. Members of the group are sought out as speakers at scientific meetings and Visiting Professors around the world.
