Research Groups and Areas

Cancer Research Institute at Queen’s University

The Cancer Research Institute at Queen's University accommodates three major cancer research groups at the university and provides space for new cancer research initiatives. The institute is directly connected to previously existing cancer research laboratories in the adjacent health sciences building, providing a total of approximately 60,000 sq.ft. of dedicated research space. Research in the institute extends from population studies of cancer etiology, through tumour biology and clinical trials, to outcomes and health services research. The institute is committed to fostering transdisciplinary investigation of areas of cancer control that lie at the interface between fundamental, clinical and population research. It also operates a training program in transdisciplinary cancer research, supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Cancer Research Society, that is tailored to meet the needs of graduate and post-doctoral trainees from a wide range of disciplines.

The three divisions of the Institute (Cancer Biology & Genetics, Cancer Care & Epidemiology, and Cancer Clinical Trials) are presently populated by approximately 250 faculty, graduate and post-doctoral trainees and support staff. Opportunities for graduate and post-doctoral training are offered in partnership with several departments at the University, including: Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Community Health & Epidemiology, Microbiology & Immunology, Oncology, Pathology & Molecular Medicine, Pharmacology & Toxicology and the School for Public Policy.

Researchers engaged in cancer research and clinical or basic scientists from other institutions are welcome to apply for associate membership based on their willingness to contribute to the goals of the institute by collaborating with QCRI faculty on cancer research projects, mentoring trainees in the CIHR/Queen's University Transdisciplinary Training Program in Cancer Research, presenting seminars and participating in information discussions, committees or working groups as appropriate.
