Clinical Evaluation Research Unit
In recent years there has been a steady increase in public and scholarly interest in death and dying and an increasingly strong emphasis on improving the care of the dying. Over 3 billion dollars are spent annually in Canada for end of life care, excluding the indirect costs to family, caregivers, and society. It is known that the quality of care provided during the last few months of life can strongly affect the quality of life of both patients and their loved ones, and that quality of life is closely associated with patient and caregiver satisfaction with care. However, there has been limited research to date in examining satisfaction with care among terminally ill patients, or their caregivers. Our program of research is designed to look at what is important to patients and their caregivers at the end of life, how to measure these factors, and how to then make improvement to the care provided.
