Research Groups and Areas

Dr. Ian Gilron is the Director of Clinical Pain Research, and Associate Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology & Toxicology. The long-term goals are to improve the clinical management of pain by advancing knowledge about anesthetic pharmacology and sensory pain mechanisms. Using a translational (“bench-to-bedside-to-bench”) approach, these goals are being addressed through clinical and/or laboratory investigation in the areas listed below:

• Analgesic drug combinations in acute and chronic pain
• Impact of movement-evoked pain on postoperative functional recovery
• Prescribing patterns and impact of therapy on quality of life in neuropathic pain
• Effects of gabapentin on analgesic tolerance to opioids
• Analgesic effects of excitatory amino acid (e.g. glutamate) modulation
