Health Services – Nursing Research
Nursing research takes place through a variety of affiliated programs. Part of the mandate of the Queen’s University School of Nursing (http://meds.queensu.ca/nursing/) is to contribute to the advancement of nursing knowledge and the development of nursing practice through research of the highest quality. At Kingston General Hospital, the goal of the Nursing Research Unit is to develop substantive programs of nurse-led research within the context of the major clinical programs supported by the hospital, and to link these programs through common conceptual themes that are of relevance to nursing practice and patient care. Members of the Nursing Research Unit lead a competitively funded health services research program focusing on systematic examination of patient, caregiver, and system outcomes of care for patients with chronic illness conditions such as cardiovascular disease or cancer; and on the development and testing of nurse led delivery systems to optimize functional well being and quality of life for these persons.
In addition, members of the Nursing Research Unit, Queen’s University School of Nursing and its practice partners have established a Practice and Research in Nursing (PRN) Group for Nursing Health Services Research (http://meds.queensu.ca/prn/) as a centre of nursing practice research in Canada. The PRN Group is an innovative academic practice partnership designed to advance nursing research. It is strongly committed to building capacity for nurses to conduct research in practice by examining existing evidence for the implementation of best practice. To this end each researcher actively participates in multi-national panels to create a framework for implementation studies of evidence-based nursing recommendations, and to evaluate implementation strategies and outcome measures and to examine the feasibility of selected strategies. The PRN Group is the vision of Nurse Scientists Dr. Margaret Harrison and Dr. Jennifer Medves from the School of Nursing and Dr. Joan Tranmer, Director of the Kingston General Hospital Nursing Research Unit.
