Thank you for expressing interest in volunteering at Kingston General Hospital. Volunteers who are committed to providing compassionate care to our community are an integral part of the K.G.H team.
Requirements for Volunteering
- Successful completion of the application process.
- A minimum commitment of one shift per week for a minimum of 6 months OR completion of an agreed upon volunteer contract for project or event-based activities.
- Excellent communication skills, reliability and self-motivation. Some volunteer programs are self-directed and those participants who put the most effort in will find greater satisfaction with their volunteer experience.
The Application process involves five steps
- Application Form: Complete a volunteer application form available here. Alternatively, you can request a copy from the volunteer services office.
- Interview: Submit the completed application form to the volunteer services office at which time you will sign up for an interview.
- Criminal Reference Check: A criminal reference check will be conducted by the volunteer services department.
- Orientation: New volunteers attend a general hospital orientation session after which, program and shift availability will be determined.
- Health Screening: Prior to being assigned a shift, volunteers must submit the results of a negative 2-step Tuberculosis (TB) test and provide proof of immunization. (Further information available on application form).
Training
Once general hospital orientation has been completed and the required health screening documentation has been submitted, the volunteer will receive training specific to the area in which he/she will be volunteering. The length of this training process varies depending on the area selected.
Volunteer Opportunities
Click here for a list of opportunities where volunteers assist throughout the hospital or you can request a copy from the volunteer services office. Every effort will be made to place the individual in the program of their choice.
All volunteer placements fall into one of three general categories.
Direct Patient Care – Shifts in this area are not limited to, but can include:
- Providing activities and games for patients
- Visiting with patients and assisting with meal time
- Playing the piano or other musical instrument
- Taking baby photos and preparing and delivering information kits to new families
- Serving refreshments to dialysis patients
Indirect Patient Care – Shifts in this area are not limited to, but can include:
- Providing information/directions to patient families in the Emergency Room Waiting Area and Enhanced Care Unit
- Welcoming patients to the Cancer Centre of South Eastern Ontario
Auxiliary Services – Shifts in this area are not limited to, but can include:
- Sales and stocking shelves in the tuck shop
- Collecting donations and selling refreshments from the coffee cart to out-patient clinics and the Emergency Room Waiting Area and Operating Room Waiting Area
