2008 YSVP FUNDRAISERS
The Youth Summer Volunteer Program is planning to host 2 Fundraisers this summer to raise funds for the Connell 4 patient rooms. The YSVP volunteers are asked to run these fundraisers and help out as much as they can.
BBQ – Wednesday July 30th 11:00 – 1:30 - to be held at KGH
CAR WASH - Saturday August 9th OR Saturday August 16th

The application and selection process for the Youth Summer Volunteer Team is complete for 2008. Please check back with us in March 2009 if you are interested in applying for next year’s program. You are also encouraged to check out Volunteer & Information Kingston’s website www.volunteerkingston.ca to search a listing of available volunteer opportunities for something that’s just right for you.
Volunteering at K.G.H. requires a personal desire to make a commitment. We are looking for young people who will undertake to give their best effort, that are comfortable spending time with both seniors and children, that like to get involved in activities and that can share their enthusiasm with others.
In return, you will receive valuable experience in a busy acute care hospital along with the chance to learn more about the many health care related professions. You will also enjoy the satisfaction which comes from donating time and talents to a worthy cause and have the opportunity to gain respect, acceptance and appreciation.

WHO:
The program is offered to youth between the ages of 14 and 18 or those born in or before 1994.
HOURS:
Throughout July & August, students volunteer an average of 2 full days each week, Monday through Friday. A typical day is from 9am-3pm and will consist of shifts in approximately 4 areas of the hospital per day. Shift rotations will change on a daily basis. Students may begin the shifts early or end them later if necessary. Volunteers are expected to commit between 60 – 80 hours over the summer including 2 mandatory days of orientation and training on July 3 & 4.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:
You can learn more about health care professions through a one-day Health Care Career Fair and a one-to-one job shadowing opportunity in the department of your choice.
DATES TO REMEMBER:

A TYPICAL DAY MAY INCLUDE:
- Cafe Host
- Patient greeter for the Cancer Centre
- Delivering coffee cart services to clinic and ER waiting areas
- Assisting in the Tuck Shop
- “Child Life” activities
- “Long Term Care” activities
- Office duties
- Delivering flowers & mail to patients
- Assisting with mealtime
- Serving refreshments to patients in Renal Unit
The Summer Program volunteers also work together to organize a fundraising event, with the proceeds going toward patient care and the purchase of medical equipment. The 2007 summer volunteers raised $500 at a staff BBQ and purchased a suction machine to assist patients who have difficulty swallowing.
