Requirements for Volunteering

  • Successful completion of the application process.
  • A minimum commitment of one shift per week for TWO terms.
  • Excellent communication skills, self motivation and initiative. Some volunteer programs are self-directed and those participants who put the most effort in will find greater satisfaction with their volunteer experience.

The Application Process Involves Five Steps

Application Form: Complete a volunteer application form available here or for pick up in the volunteer services office located on Connell 1 of the hospital.

References: Include two references that can speak to your ability to relate well with people of all ages; as well as your level of reliability, independence, maturity and ability to follow instructions.

Click here to print a copy of our reference form, replacing the previous system of submitting references in the form of a letter. To maintain confidentiality, reference forms must be submitted in a sealed, signed envelope or emailed directly to volunteer@kgh.kari.net

References can include a teacher, neighbour, employer, camp counselor, minister, volunteer supervisor, etc (references cannot be immediate family members).

Interview: Submit your completed application form, including two reference forms to the volunteer services office. Only those applicants with completed application forms will be given interview times.

Criminal Reference Check: Upon conditional acceptance, a criminal reference check will be conducted by the volunteer services department.

Orientation: If accepted, attend a general hospital orientation session.

Health Screening: Upon acceptance and PRIOR to being assigned a shift, a successful applicant must submit the results of a negative 2-step Tuberculosis (TB) test and provide proof of immunization (MMR). See pages 3 & 4 of the application form for the required information. While the test is not required until you have been accepted, those individuals who have already completed a test prior to acceptance will be able to begin volunteering more quickly. Note: It can take up to 2 weeks to complete the TB test.

Placement Confirmation and Training

Once general hospital orientation has been completed and the required health screening documentation has been submitted, the volunteer will receive training specific to the area in which he/she will be volunteering. The length of this training process varies depending on the area selected.

Volunteer Opportunities

Click here for a list of volunteer opportunities that are available to student volunteers or you can pick up a copy from the volunteer services office. NOTE: This listing is for REFERENCE ONLY.

Not all shifts will be available at the time of your application and confirmation of a placement will follow the selection process and attendance at hospital orientation.

The same application is completed for all volunteer areas and upon acceptance every effort will be made to place the individual in the program of their choice.
